German Military Delegation Reaffirms Support for Kurdistan Region

Sheikh Jaafar Sheikh Mustafa, Vice President of the Kurdistan Region, received Colonel Peter Cooper, Commander of the German forces within the International Coalition in the Kurdistan Region, along with an accompanying delegation, the Kurdistan Region's Presidency reported on Monday, 28 April 2025.
According to a statement by the Kurdistan Region's Presidency, the two sides discussed the latest security developments in the region, the relationship between Germany and the Kurdistan Region, as well as military assistance and training for the Peshmerga forces. They also addressed the reform process within the Peshmerga, the ongoing threat posed by the Islamic State (ISIS), regional instability in the Middle East, and its impact on Iraq.
"The Vice President underscored the vital role of the International Coalition forces in countering ISIS, emphasising their importance in maintaining peace and stability across the region," the statement said.
It added: "Commenting on the situation in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, he highlighted the necessity of safeguarding coalition forces and diplomatic missions. He also stressed the necessity of the ongoing discussions between the Kurdistan Region and the federal government of Iraq, aimed at resolving challenges to the political process and protecting constitutional rights. He then highlighted the reform process and reunification of the Peshmerga."
Moreover, the statement noted that the visiting delegation reaffirmed the commitment of the German forces to continued support and cooperation with the Peshmerga in the fight against terrorism and the ISIS threat. They also expressed their strong interest in the reform and unification of the Peshmerga forces and voiced their hope for increased stability and peace in the region.
