Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, received on Saturday, 12 April 2025, a United States (U.S.) Congress delegation led by Adam Smith, Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee, in Erbil.

They exchanged views on the peace process in Türkiye, the situation in Syria, talks between Iran and the United States and other latest developments in the region.

Both sides agreed that terrorism, especially the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist group, is still a threat to the security and stability of Kurdistan and Iraq. In this context, the congress delegation reaffirmed the continued support of the United States to the Kurdistan Region and Iraq in the fight against terrorism.

Regarding the Kurdistan Region's political situation and the efforts to form a new cabinet, the Deputy Prime Minister stated: "While the government-forming process is not proceeding quickly, very positive steps have been taken."

He noted: "All efforts are towards reaching an agreement between the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan to form a strong and united government that will meet the demands of the people and preserve the political and security stability of the Kurdistan Region in this difficult period."

Regarding the issue of oil and gas, the Deputy Prime Minister clarified that the Kurdistan Regional Government is hopeful and will do everything in its power to come to a deal with Baghdad soon in order to begin oil exports.

As for the gas file, he stated that the Kurdistan Regional Government's priority right now is using the gas to supply the citizens with 24-hour electricity, as well as to supply gas for usage in homes and industrial facilities.

Other members of the congress delegation included Foreign Affairs Committee member Michael Baumgartner and House Armed Services Committee members Sarah Jacobs, George Whitesides and Wesley Bell.
