Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, met with the Greek Minister of Environment and Energy to discuss renewable energy and the adverse effects of climate change on the Kurdistan Region.

During the meeting, Deputy PM Qubad Talabani and Minister Stavros Papastavrou addressed the topic of renewable energy and the detrimental impact of climate change on the Kurdistan Region. Minister Papastavrou pledged to encourage relevant Greek experts and companies to collaborate with the Kurdistan Region in the field of renewable energy.

They also explored potential solutions to the waste management issue, particularly in the Tanjaro area of Sulaymaniyah.

Over the past five years, the Greek government has successfully tackled its own waste management challenges using scientific approaches. The Greek side expressed its willingness to assist in addressing the waste problem in the Tanjaro area and to support the Kurdistan Region in various specialised sectors.

Deputy PM, Greece's FM Discuss Strengthening Ties

On the sidelines of the annual Delphi Economic Forum, Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, met with Giorgos Gerapetritis, Greece’s Foreign Affairs Minister.

The meeting, which was also attended by Dara Rashid, the Minister of Planning, and Daban Shadala, the Deputy Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) Department of Foreign Relations, saw both sides agree on the importance of strengthening ties between the Kurdistan Region and Greece, particularly in the areas of trade, agriculture, and tourism. They also emphasised the need to increase the number of flights between the Kurdistan Region and Greece, and expressed their commitment to working towards the establishment of direct flights between Sulaymaniyah and Athens in the future.

In another part of the meeting, the issue of combating illegal immigration was discussed. The Deputy Prime Minister stated that the most effective way to address illegal immigration is for Greece and the European Union to support the Kurdistan Region in its economic development and job creation efforts. This, he explained, would help deter young people from considering illegal immigration, as such migration harms both the Kurdistan Region and the countries of the European Union.

The efforts to form the new KRG cabinet were also discussed. In this regard, the Deputy Prime Minister stated that considerable progress had been made, and there is strong consensus to establish the tenth cabinet as soon as possible.

Regarding the situation in Syria and the recent developments in the region, both sides emphasised the need for all parties, along with the international community, to work together to maintain stability, ease tensions, and resolve issues through dialogue and mutual understanding.
