The cleanup process begins at 'Dara Swtawaka' Market.
On Monday, 7 April 2025, the representative of Qubad Talabani, Head of the Secretariat Bureau of President Mam Jalal, visited the Dara Swtawaka market in Sulaymaniyah, accompanied by Laila Omar, the Mayor of Sulaymaniyah. The purpose of the visit was to initiate compensation procedures for those affected by the devastating fire that broke out in the market on Saturday, 5 April, resulting in the destruction of over 100 shops.
Municipality teams began clearing debris and cleaning the market on the same day, with plans to rebuild it according to a new design being prepared by the Sulaymaniyah Municipality's Engineering Department.
Atta Mohammed, Qubad Talabani's representative, spoke to reporters during his visit to the market, stating: "According to an initial estimate from a special committee at the Civil Defence Directorate, the cost of rebuilding the market is approximately one billion dinars. The extent of the damage varies from shop to shop, depending on the goods and equipment inside."
He continued, "The estimated cost of reconstruction may increase, but we will not have a final figure until the clearing and debris removal process is complete."
The fire, which broke out early on the morning of Saturday, 5 April 2025, caused extensive damage to the market in central Sulaymaniyah. According to information gathered by PUKMEDIA, 116 shops and four food stalls were destroyed in the blaze. In response, Qubad Talabani has ordered the market to be rebuilt, with the clean-up process beginning immediately.
