PUK to Compensate Shop Owners Affected by Sulaymaniyah Bazaar Fire

At the expense of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), Qubad Talabani, head of President Mam Jalal's Secretariat Bureau, will compensate the shop owners whose shops were destroyed in the fire at the Dara Sutawaka bazaar in Sulaymaniyah, Talabani's representative announced on Sunday, 6 April 2025.

Atta Ahmed, Qubad Talabani's representative, said in a press conference: "According to the latest statistics, 116 shops selling goods and 4 food and fast food shops were burned. A detailed report has been prepared on the damages."

Ahmed noted that "each shop owner will be compensated according to the prepared report on the extent of the damage to their shop," stressing that "compensation will be disbursed to those affected in cash within a week."

He further states that the damage has been valued at over one billion dinars thus far. 

"In addition to creating a new map of the bazaar, the Sulaymaniyah Municipality is expected to supervise the full restoration and reconstruction of the bazaar," he said. 

He added: "In order to stop similar accidents from happening again, the General Directorate of Electricity in Sulaymaniyah will also supervise the installation of power lines using contemporary machinery while taking safety and firefighting measures into consideration."

On Saturday, 5 April 2025, a massive fire broke out in a part of the Dara Sutawaka bazaar in Sulaymaniyah, but it was controlled without any casualties being reported.
