On Saturday, 5 April 2025, a massive fire broke out in a part of the Dara Sutawaka bazaar in Sulaymaniyah, but it was controlled without any casualties being reported.

The fire started in the morning and initially damaged a number of stores. However, the fire spread swiftly and damaged about 150 stores, according to statements from the affected shop owners.

"The fire has been brought under control without any casualties thanks to the diligent efforts of the director and teams from the Civil Defence Police Directorate, in coordination with citizens and emergency medical teams," said Sulaymaniyah Governor Haval Abubakir.

He went on to say that the cause of the fire is presently being looked into by the appropriate authorities.

A member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Bloc in the Iraqi parliament stated that they will seek compensation from Baghdad for the shop owners.

"We will make every attempt to compensate for some of the material and financial losses through the Iraqi government's emergency reserve budget," PUK Bloc Member Dr. Narmin Maruf told PUKMEDIA.

"We will ask for compensations for the Sulaymaniyah shop owners through the parliament," she added.

Situated in the centre of Sulaymaniyah city, Dara Sutawaka is a well-known and traditional market that is home to numerous stores offering common items.
