Washington and Moscow have called for an urgent meeting of the Security Council advisers on Syria.

According to Russian news outlets, Dmitry Polyanskiy, Russia's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, announced on Sunday, 9 March 2025, that Russia and the United States have requested an emergency, closed-door consultative meeting of the UN Security Council to address the violence against civilians in western Syria.

According to Polyanskiy, the requested meeting is scheduled to take place on Monday, 10 March 2025.

Since Thursday, March 6, 2025, Syria has witnessed significant violence, primarily in the western regions of Latakia and Tartus. Clashes broke out between Syrian security forces and insurgents loyal to the former President, resulting in a tragic loss of life.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) has reported alarming numbers of civilian casualties as the clashes continue between the Syrian National Army and remnants of the Assad regime in northwestern Syria.
