The General Directorate of Counter-Terrorism Group (CTG) of the Kurdistan Region announced the arrest of a number of terrorists in a military operation with their allies.

The CTG said in a statement that the  CTG and their allies successfully apprehended a number of ISIS militants who had connections with former officials of the so-called Baghdad Wilayat of the Islamic State (ISIS) in a precise intelligence and military operation.

The captured terrorists had direct links with several ISIS military commanders and had been planning terrorist operations in Kirkuk province following the collapse of the Syrian regime, according to the statement

It added that the suspects were previously active members of ISIS with strong connections to prominent ISIS leaders and had participated in planning armed attacks in the region.

The statement noted that the operation was carried out professionally without any casualties, resulting in the arrest of the suspects. Subsequently, the suspects were handed over to the specialized court for further investigation and legal prosecution.

ISIS seized large swathes of Iraqi land in 2014, declaring a "caliphate" and killing thousands of people there before Baghdad declared victory in 2017. However, remnants of the terrorists are still active in the country, especially in the regions disputed between Erbil and Baghdad.

The terrorists ambush, kidnap, and extort both civilians and members of the security forces in the disputed areas, which stretch across several provinces, including Kirkuk, Nineveh, Diyala, and Saladin.
