In a joint intelligence and military operation, the Counter Terrorism Group (CTG), Iraqi Counter Terrorism Service (ICTS), and the International Coalition forces successfully apprehended several wanted terrorists, the CTG Kurdistan reported on Saturday, 8 February 2025.
The CTG said in a statement that the arrested suspects were former fighters in the military division (Diwan Al-Jund) of the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist organisation, and after the collapse of ISIS, the suspects had taken refuge in the outskirts of Kirkuk.
According to preliminary investigations, the terrorists had been playing a key role in providing logistical supplies and materials to ISIS sleeper cells and active networks in the Kirkuk region, the statement noted.
The statement pointed out that security forces managed to arrest the suspects in a precise intelligence operation without casualties and handed them over to the specialised court for legal proceedings, adding that this joint operation demonstrates the ongoing coordination and cooperation between security forces to maintain security and stability in the region and combat terrorism.
ISIS seized large swathes of Iraqi land in 2014, declaring a "caliphate" and killing thousands of people there before Baghdad declared victory in 2017. However, remnants of the terrorists are still active in the country, especially in the regions disputed between Erbil and Baghdad.
The terrorists ambush, kidnap, and extort both civilians and members of the security forces in the disputed areas, which stretch across several provinces, including Kirkuk, Nineveh, Diyala, and Saladin.
Security forces conduct frequent operations aimed at eliminating the remnants of the terrorists.
