The Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) issued a statement on Monday, 3 February 2025, in which it reaffirmed support for the legitimate demands of teachers and all segments of Kurdistan, pointing out that the strike and various civil activities of teachers and civil servants are fair and civil wills.
The Political Bureau's message said:
The PUK genuinely supports all of the rightful demands made by Kurdistan's teachers and all the other segments, regardless of their class or sector, who are fighting for salaries and a decent life for themselves. In light of this, President Bafel Jalal Talabani shortened his trip to the United States of America in order to closely pressure the regional and Baghdad administrations to find a long-term solution to this problem, which is a citizen's right.
We, the PUK, believe that the Sulaymaniyah Governorate's teachers' and civil servants' strike and other civic actions to ensure their salaries and their children's livelihood and to obtain assurance in this respect are fair and civil wills. The practice of purposely delaying or postponing salaries cannot be justified under any circumstances, especially as the Federal Supreme Court's rulings on salary entitlement are clear. Furthermore, the federal and regional governments' joint commitment must be implemented free from political arm wrestling.
Consequently, while defending and supporting these civil wills, the PUK is also proud to have this secure space for legitimate freedom in its region. It also emphasises that the civil struggle and demands of the teachers are Kurdistani and Iraqi demands, and their resolution must also be nationwide, as well as accompanied by a joint concern from the regional and federal governments, because it is not legitimate to hold the people as hostages of the anxiety from worrying about the arrival or non-arrival of an ordinary citizen entitlement.
A radical solution must be found to this issue that has been prolonged without justification.
