Fahmi Burhan, the Chairman of the General Board for Kurdistani Areas Outside the Kurdistan Region.
Fahmi Burhan, the Chairman of the General Board for Kurdistani Areas Outside the Kurdistan Region has confirmed that the population census process in the disputed areas is progressing well, emphasising that adopting the 1957 census is crucial for these regions.
Fahmi Burhan stated during a press conference in Kirkuk on Thursday evening, November 21, 2024: "The population census is ongoing, with the second phase due to conclude at midnight. For us, the decision to adopt the 1957 census in the disputed areas covered by Article 140 of the Constitution is highly significant and has alleviated our concerns."
He continued, "In all disputed areas, the process is progressing smoothly, and the diversity in Kirkuk is a source of pride. Anyone registered in the general census in this city is, by all standards and principles upon which the new Iraqi state was founded, a Kirkuki. We hope this spirit will prevail among all communities."
Burhan also expressed hope that the committee responsible for verifying the data would begin its work shortly, adding: "I would like to inform both the Kurdish and Iraqi public that anyone who provided false information and is not a native of these regions, once compared with the 1957 census, should return to their original region, in accordance with the Iraqi Constitution."
