This morning, Thursday, the general population census teams began their tasks for the second day across Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

The census process, which started yesterday morning (Wednesday), will continue until midnight tonight. During this time, enumerators will visit every household to gather and verify data.

The 2024 general population and housing census is the first to take place in Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region, since 1987. Over 120,000 enumerators, stationed across all regions of Iraq, are taking part, and each family will be asked more than 70 questions.

A curfew has been imposed throughout Iraq, lasting until midnight Thursday, and citizens must remain in their homes when the census teams arrive to ensure accurate data recording.

The United Nations Commends the Census

Dr. Mohammed al-Hassan, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) commended Iraq's first population census in 27 years, highlighting its importance for future development plans and projects in the country.

Dr. Hassan acknowledged the significant efforts made by the government to ensure the success of the census, stating: "Iraq is undergoing a historic phase, and what we witnessed today are critical steps for the country’s future. This census is aimed at development, and the progress of any nation depends primarily on such a census. The professional work we observed today instills confidence in the process and demonstrates the serious commitment to its implementation, in technical cooperation with the UN Population Fund."

He expressed appreciation for the hard work of the census team and the technical support provided by the UN Population Fund. Dr. Hassan also encouraged widespread participation and cooperation for the benefit of Iraq and its people. "The census is crucial for ensuring rights, access to public services, and the equitable distribution of resources across regions, as well as for planning based on modern scientific standards. On behalf of the UN, I congratulate the Iraqi people on this achievement and wish you all the best toward a brighter future for Iraq."
