Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and Co-leader of the Progressive Alliance, is set to participate in the first meeting of the presidency board of the Progressive Alliance, scheduled for early 2025 in Germany.
The Meeting is Organised by Germany's Social Democratic Party
Dara Khaylani, Head of the PUK Foreign Relations Department and leader of the PUK delegation at the recent 4th Progressive Alliance Global Convention in Santiago, Chile, stated to PUKMEDIA: "The first meeting of the Presidency Board of the Progressive Alliance is slated for early 2025 in Germany, with the attendance of the nine co-leaders of the alliance, including PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani."
The 4th Progressive Alliance Global Convention took place on 5-6 October 2024, where President Talabani was elected as a co-leader of the Progressive Alliance, which comprises 119 social democratic parties from around the globe.
Khaylani remarked, "The PUK, as a prominent global social democratic entity, will engage in promoting and developing new strategies and programmes to advance democracy while addressing various challenges."
PUK's Relations are Progressing Well
"The PUK's international relations are improving, and President Bafel's election as a co-leader reflects these efforts over the past six months. This achievement is significant for both the PUK and the Kurdish people, particularly in the realms of democracy, justice, equality, transparency, and the fight against extremism," Khaylani said.
The alliance also includes 40 board members, with two from the PUK: Dr. Dara Khaylani and Tanya Gilly.
Arab Parties Supported PUK
Khaylani, a member of the PUK's Leadership Council, noted, "In addition to support from three Kurdish parties, the Arab Social Democratic Alliance, consisting of 13 parties, backed the PUK and President Bafel's co-leadership in the Progressive Alliance."
Thirty Members of the Alliance are in Power in Their Countries
Of the 119 social democratic parties in the Progressive Alliance, approximately 30 are currently in power in their respective countries.
Khaylani further stated, "The PUK's role in governance, democracy, transparency, women's rights, and freedom issues in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region was evident at the convention. President Bafel's views will carry weight and represent a global responsibility."
He concluded, "The PUK and President Bafel play a crucial role in addressing the challenges facing the Kurdistan Region and threats to democratic values. Alliance members will advocate for the protection of democracy, freedom, and human rights, tackling associated issues together."
The Progressive Alliance is an international organisation of progressive and social democratic parties, founded on 22 May 2013 in Leipzig, Germany. The PUK is one of its founding members, representing over 140 parties and organisations worldwide.
