The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) has announced that it has finalised all preparations for the Kurdistan Parliament elections set to take place on 20 October 2024.
During a press conference followed by PUKMEDIA, Judge Omar Ahmed, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the IHEC, stated that over 95% of the necessary procedures for the Kurdistan Parliament elections have been completed.
He further noted that the ballot papers and electronic cards have been delivered to the IHEC offices in the Kurdistan Region. He urged citizens to visit the registration centres to collect their electoral cards, emphasising that without an electronic card, no voter will be able to cast their vote.
He explained that the Commission has also prepared the voting machines across all governorates and is making every effort to ensure the elections are conducted transparently and fairly. According to Ahmed, they have invited all consulates, as well as local and international observers, to oversee the elections. Nine consulates have expressed their interest in monitoring the process, along with eight international organisations that have confirmed their willingness to do so.
The Chairman of the Board of Commissioners stated that they have 41,000 employees tasked with managing citizen affairs on election day, all of whom have undergone the necessary training to perform their duties effectively.
He continued by stating that the Commission is committed to complete transparency and integrity in conducting the elections. He highlighted that these elections are distinct from previous ones due to the use of advanced electronic devices, leaving no room for fraud. He also expressed gratitude to the United Nations team for their support and assistance in ensuring the Commission's tasks are successful.
