The staff of PUKMEDIA, the official website of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), visited the Guardians of Truth Monument Sulaymaniyah and laid flowers in tribute to the souls of the martyred journalists.
"We are here today to show our appreciation and respect for the souls of our martyred journalist colleagues whose names are engraved on the memorial," said Atta Karim, Editor-In-Chief of PUKMEDIA.
"This monument has united all those who were martyred for promoting freedom of speech," he added.
"The march of journalism will continue and freedom will also continue. We want to emphasise the need to expand the scope of freedom of speech," he said.
On September 14, 2024, the "Guardians of Truth Monument" was unveiled in Sulaymaniyah. The names of all journalists martyred in the past 21 years are engraved on the monument which is placed close to the Platform of Freedom at Azadi Park in Sulaymaniyah. The monument is a homage to the memories of 551 journalists who have lost their lives in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region since 2003. The number also includes foreign journalists who were martyred in Iraq.
During the unveiling ceremony of the monument, Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, who came up with the idea of building the monument said: "The martyred journalists will remain immortals, while the legacy of their killers is one of lasting shame. We hope that no more names will ever need to be added to this monument."
