Qubad Talabani, the Kurdistan Region's Deputy Prime Minister, met with Alina Romanowski, the United States (US) Ambassador to Iraq, to discuss the Kurdistan parliamentary elections, diplomatic ties between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad, and a variety of other issues.

The upcoming parliamentary elections were the primary focus of the meeting, also attended by Steven Bitner, the US Consul General in Kurdistan Region, which took place in Erbil on Monday, September 9, 2024. The participants emphasised the importance of conducting the electoral process in a transparent and fair manner that effectively fulfills the will and aspirations of the Kurdistan Region citizens. Both sides agreed that the international observer group should closely monitor the election process.

The security situation in Iraq and the region was reviewed, and the importance of keeping coalition forces in Iraq was highlighted, given that terrorism remains a significant threat to regional security and stability.

The meeting also addressed relations between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad. In this regard, DPM Talabani highlighted the visit of the Iraqi federal government's delegation to the Kurdistan Region, saying: "We will make every effort to reach an agreement with the federal government and settle all matters, including salaries and budget."

DPM Talabani: We Need to Boost Relations with the Region's Countries 

Deputy Prime Minister Qabad Talabani also received Nasir Mammadov, the Azerbaijani Ambassador to Iraq, to explore strategies for enhancing the relations between the Kurdistan Region and Azerbaijan.

The discussion deliberated on the historical ties between the two peoples of Kurdistan and Azerbaijan and both sides expressed desire to collaborate in enhancing the ties between the Kurdistan Region and Azerbaijan in several domains, particularly in trade and investment.

The Azerbaijani Ambassador stated that his country plans to establish a cultural and artistic office in the Kurdistan Region soon and emphasised his country's readiness to support the Kurdistan Region in developing service programs and tourism projects.

DPM Talabani said that he will assist in establishing coordination and joint work with the Azerbaijani Ambassador to strengthen relations, especially in the field of trade.

"We need to boost our relations with the countries of the region in various fields," DPM Talabani wrote on his Facebook page.
