DPM & newly appointed US CG
Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani met with newly appointed US Consul General Steven Bitner to discuss the Kurdistan Region's current political situation, relations with Baghdad, and relations with the US.
Mark Stroh, former US Consul General, and Daban Shadala, Deputy Head of the Foreign Relations Department, attended the meeting in Erbil on Wednesday, August 14, 2024. Talabani praised the former US Consul for his exceptional efforts to advance human rights, advocate for free speech, and assist civil society organisations in Kurdistan. Talabani wished him luck with his future missions.
He then congratulated the newly appointed US Consul General on his new position and expressed his willingness to provide any support and coordination required to ensure the success of his new mission.
The meeting focused on the political situation in the Kurdistan Region. Both parties agreed on the importance of holding transparent and equitable elections that accurately reflect the preferences of the Region's citizens.
The need to improve relations between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad was also emphasised during the meeting, with the goal of resolving the issues comprehensively and in accordance with the Constitution.
Another subject discussed was how to improve relations between the Kurdistan Region and the US. They agreed to improve coordination and collaboration in order to strengthen bilateral relations across a variety of fields.
