PUK President's meeting with UN delegation
Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the
Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), welcomed a UN delegation led by Claudio
Cordon, Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United
Nations in Iraq for Political Affairs and Election Support.
The elections, the security situation in
the Kurdistan Region and the surrounding area, and the current conflict between
Erbil and Baghdad were all discussed. They stressed the importance of
maintaining communication between the parties to address concerns in accordance
with the Constitution and safeguard the rights of all parties involved.
About the upcoming parliamentary
elections in the Kurdistan Region and their scheduled date, President Bafel
stated: "We are dedicated to adhering to the timeframe established by the
Independent High Electoral Commission for the elections, and it is imperative
that all other parties also adhere to this date. Impeding and obstructing the
process will not be beneficial, but rather it will lead the Kurdistan Region
into an unfavourable situation."
The meeting also addressed the security
situation and maintaining stability in the surrounding region. President Bafel
emphasised: "Our position is clear. We support dialogue and mutual
understanding as the most effective means of resolving issues and avoiding
further complications. We uphold the sovereignty and security of neighbouring
countries and welcome any initiatives that promote peace and collaboration in
safeguarding the national interests."
Regarding the relations between Erbil and
Baghdad and the resolution of current disputes, President Bafel stated:
"The PUK has taken steps in accordance with a national policy that is
dedicated to safeguarding and strengthening the framework of the Kurdistan
Region. We believe in working together and collaborative governance, and we aim
to safeguard the rights of all parties within the Constitution. Everyone must
recognise that authoritarianism and the practice of enforcing one's will are
outdated. What the country truly requires is peace and the provision of a
higher standard of living for its citizens, rather than engaging in unjust
conflicts."
