Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister,
has stated that the danger of environmental degradation surpasses the danger of
terrorism, as the existence of terrorist organisations is temporary. However,
environmental degradation can be persistent and enduring, and it is not
possible to restore it or mitigate its inevitable impact on future generations.
Qubad Talabani acknowledged in an article
in PUKMEDIA's
Opinions that, despite our long-standing awareness of the anticipated perils of
climate change, annual local and international reports and studies consistently
warn us about irreversible and significant disasters. "Nevertheless, our
political and governance systems in Iraq and Kurdistan exhibit a significant
lack of interest or concern," he added.
He continued to say, "Sincerely
speaking, I do not think politics will become involved in this important and
potentially dangerous matter until citizens and civil society apply sufficient
pressure."
"Undoubtedly, the risk of
environmental degradation far surpasses the risk of terrorism. Terrorism is a
temporary phase that will eventually come to an end. However, environmental
damage is irreversible and poses a hazard to future generations. "To
clarify, additional environmental deterioration serves as a direct cause of
forthcoming instability," he stated.
"Even if we disagree on many
policies, the environmental issue must bring us together," he emphasised.
"As much as I am concerned about solving the Tanjaro problem as an
official in the Kurdistan Region, the federal government officials in Baghdad,
Basra, and Anbar should be equally concerned about solving the Tanjaro
problem."
"On the other hand, both my friends
and I in the Region must be concerned about the marshes of the south, because
if we do not, we will suffer the undesired justice of the environment," he
added.
The Deputy Prime Minister has proposed an
initiative to convene a conference on environmental risks in all regions of
Iraq and Kurdistan. The purpose of this conference is to address the issue of
pollution in affected areas and come up with effective solutions. The
initiative aims to allocate sufficient funds and develop a comprehensive plan
to implement the proposed measures.
