UNAMI Chief Concludes Term in Iraq

Iraqi President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid met with Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) to mark the end of her mission in Iraq, at Baghdad Palace on Sunday, May 26, 2024.
As part of the meeting, President Rashid highlighted the importance of strengthening relations with the United Nations and expanding cooperation with it as it is essential to develop the work of United Nations agencies in a manner that supports the consolidation of democratic foundations and guarantees respect for human rights.
As His Excellency stated, things are looking up in Iraq and the situation has substantially improved following the defeat of the Islamic State (ISIS) and the establishment of security and stability.
"The government has identified the improvement of services and living conditions as a priority in its program, as well as the promotion of peaceful coexistence among all Iraqis," he added.
In his remarks, the President expressed gratitude to Plasschaert and the United Nations for their support of Iraq, particularly concerning assistance to the displaced persons as well as initiatives aimed at supporting women and children.
Affirming Iraq's commitment to cooperating with UNAMI in addressing challenges in the fields of environment, climate, health, and education, His Excellency expressed his best wishes to her for her future missions.
According to Special Representative Plasschaert, the United Nations is always keen to enhance efforts to address and confront economic and social challenges in Iraq as well as to foster social cohesion. In addition, she thanked and appreciated the support she received from His Excellency during her time in Iraq.
