In response to a proposal from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), the Iraqi parliament declared March 16 an official holiday.

Chro Hama Sharif, a member of the PUK Faction in the Iraqi parliament, told PUKMEDIA: "Following our faction's proposal for the 16th of March, which corresponds with the day of the chemical assault on Halabja, and the 14th of April, which is recognised as the anniversary of the Anfal campaign against the Kurds, to be declared official holidays in Iraq. However, the Iraqi parliament unanimously declared only March 16 as an official holiday in Iraq.

"The holiday also includes the Kurdistan Region. "Unfortunately, the Kurdistan Regional Government should have declared March 16 a public holiday sooner," she said.

Previously, in an official letter signed by the faction's leader, Harem Kamal Agha, the PUK faction requested that the Iraqi parliament recognise April 14, the anniversary of the Anfal Campaign, and March 16, the day of the chemical attack on Halabja, as official holidays in Iraq.
