Kurdistan Region's Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani.
On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, the Deputy Prime Minister declares that upholding press freedom is one of his core political values. Soon, a monument to the "Guardians of Truth" will be created in Sulaymaniyah, honouring all the journalists who lost their lives in Kurdistan and Iraq.
In a statement published today, Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister, stated: “One of my steadfast political beliefs and guiding principles is the defence of journalistic freedom. Experience from other nations shows that without press freedom, other freedoms cannot be upheld, civil society cannot grow, a stable democracy cannot be built, and decent and accountable governance cannot be developed.”
He further said: “Journalists play a crucial role in maintaining healthy democracies and keeping the public informed; they are an indispensable mechanism for doing so. “
Qubad Talabani also said: “On World Press Freedom Day, I extend my congratulations to all journalists, particularly those who professionally report the truth.”
“On this occasion, we commemorate all journalism martyrs in Kurdistan and Iraq and announce that we will soon create a monument to the "Guardians of Truth" in Sulaymaniyah, which we have been working on for more than a year in honour of journalists who have given their lives while in the line of duty since 2003, he further added.
