President Rashid
Abdullatif
Jamal Rashid, the President of the Republic of Iraq, has issued decrees
appointing governors to the following Iraqi governorates: Baghdad, Basra,
Nineveh, Babil, Karbala, Wasit, Dhi Qar, Najaf, al-Anbar, al-Muthanna, Maysan,
and al-Diwaniya.
The decrees were issued after the Legal Department completed the necessary
procedures. Additional procedures will be implemented to select and issue
decrees for the remaining governors.
According to PUKMEDIA’s source, the council has elected the governor of
Salahaddin; however, the appointment is still pending republican approval.
Nonetheless, the provincial councils of Kirkuk and Diyala have yet to appoint
governors. Once the council elections are completed, a republican decree will
be issued to formalise their appointment.
The Iraqi provincial council elections took place on December 18, 2023. On
January 21, 2024, the Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC)
approved and officially announced the final election results.
