The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) President, Bafel Jalal Talabani, has been urged by an Iraqi party to launch a national initiative for a "national dialogue among Iraqi political factions" because of the important role that President Mam Jalal has played. It is evident how significant President Bafel and the PUK are, and the Iraqi party demands action from this angle, according to a member of the PUK Leadership, since there are multiple issues and threats that genuinely threaten Iraq.
Mahmood Hussein al-Agili, Secretary-General of the Iraqi al-Umma party, visited the PUK headquarters in order to request President Bafel's initiative.
Rabiha Hamad, a member of the Leadership Council and Head of the PUK's Baghdad headquarters, told PUKMEDIA: "Considering the significant impact that President Mam Jalal has had in Iraq previously, and President Bafel's continuation of his policies, Mahmood al-Agili, the Secretary-General of the al-Umma party, has urged President Bafel to publicly propose a national dialogue initiative in order to address the concerns of the Iraqi people and find solutions. "
"Iraq is currently facing a multitude of internal and external challenges," she added, "Political factions are at odds and tensions between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad remain high. Externally, there are concerns about the foreign forces, among other issues. Given these threats, it is strongly recommended that the PUK leader use Mam's house in Baghdad and the PUK as a unifying platform to address diverse viewpoints and effectively settle disputes."
On January 30, 2024, Al-Agili led a senior delegation from his party's Political Bureau to the PUK headquarters in Baghdad. The president and the PUK, who always play a national role, have high political responsibility, and are a peaceful force to provide solutions to problems that arise, were also considered in terms of their roles in Iraq's political and decision-making centre.
Thus, the Secretary General states: "Given that the PUK is a powerful force that is supported by all Iraqi political parties and forces, President Bafel should declare a national initiative in order to begin the national dialogue required to overcome the country's political deadlock and confront both internal and external threats."
The PUK Leadership Member further stated that they will receive the Iraqi al-Umma party's request on paper and forward it to President Bafel Talabani.
