Omar Ahmed Mohammed, the Chairman of the Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC), has issued a response to the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) regarding the projected date for the Kurdistan parliamentary elections.
The official response, dispatched to the office of the KRG on January 2, 2023, stated: "The decree has designated February 25, 2024 as the date for the Kurdistan parliamentary elections. However, it is not possible to hold the elections on this date due to the need for adequate preparation and sufficient advance notice, as outlined in the preparation schedule." Additionally, IHEC chairman has stated that the deadline does not allow for the Kurdistan parliamentary elections to take place on February 25 of this year.
The letter states that IHEC attributes the delay to the accounting procedures of the Ministry of Finance that are associated with funding. As a result, IHEC has been unable to follow its planned timeline for contracting and purchasing election materials.
The IHEC chairman has suggested a revised schedule for the parliamentary elections in Kurdistan and emphasized the need for effective coordination with the IHEC to ensure a successful election in all aspects.
