Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, met with Iraqi National Security Advisor Qassim Al-Araji in Sulaymaniyah to discuss relations between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad, as well as ways to improve coordination between the security forces of the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad.
The meeting was attended by Jalal Sheikh Naji, Head of the Zaniyari Agency, and Hiwa Ahmed, Head of the Kurdistan Region's Asayish Agency, on Sunday, October 29, 2023. They discussed relations between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad. "Although the two governments have good relations," Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani said, "the process of resolving the outstanding problems between the two sides, particularly the budget problem, is very slow."
"The lives of employees and people in the Kurdistan Region are unfavorable due to a lack of budget and a lack of timely distribution of salaries," he added. “Baghdad authorities must gain a thorough understanding of the circumstances surrounding Kurdistan Region employees and dissociate their salaries from any political tensions."
Following that, strategies for increasing cooperation between security forces in the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad were discussed. Particular focus was placed on areas that serve as a connection between Peshmerga forces and other Iraqi military units.
Qubad Talabani stressed how important it was for all security forces to work together. He also said that the federal government should think about all Iraqi forces, including the Peshmerga, to make sure that terrorist groups can't find any weak spots that they can use. This would protect the safety and stability of the Kurdistan Region and other parts of Iraq.
They also discussed air strikes on the Kurdistan Region and other countries' violations of Iraq's and the Kurdistan Region's sovereignty. Qubad Talabani urged the federal government to prioritize this issue and engage actively at the international level to effectively address the ongoing violations that result in a significant number of deaths each year.
