Presidents of Iraq and Italy meet in Rome
On Tuesday, the President of the Republic of Iraq, Abdullatif Jamal Rashid, met with Italian President Sergio Mattarella at the Presidential Palace in Rome.
As part of the meeting, Iraqi-Italian relations of friendship and cooperation were discussed, with a particular focus on issues of common concern between the two countries.
During his remarks, President Rashid reaffirmed Iraq and Italy's strong bilateral relationship and expressed Iraq's desire to expand these relations in various sectors in the way that would most serve both nations' citizens.
In order to combat the serious consequences of climate change, which is associated with desertification and drought, significant efforts must be made on an international level, His Excellency said, stating it is imperative that we work together to resolve the global water crisis.
Iraq's Abdullatif Jamal Rashid highlighted that Iraq is experiencing a severe shortage of water, similar to other countries suffering from water crises, which has adverse effects on the lives of all Iraqis.
The President expressed the hope that Iraq would reach understandings with upstream countries that would guarantee the country's fair share of water and meet the country's drinking and irrigation needs. Additionally, he underlined that the Iraqi government has developed ambitious plans for improving water management systems and rationalizing the consumption of water.
As part of the review of the latest developments in Palestine, President Rashid affirmed Iraq's firm stance in supporting the Palestinian cause and condemning the violations against the Palestinian people. Furthermore, he confirmed the right of the Palestinians to establish their own state and live in security and peace.
It was noted by the Italian President, Sergio Mattarella that bilateral relations should be further developed and that the horizons of cooperation need to be expanded at various levels so as to meet common interests.
While lauding Iraq's crucial role in bringing states in the region closer together, President Mattarella reaffirmed Italy's commitment to further supporting Iraq's security and stability.
