Qubad Talabani: Political Disputes Should Not Obstruct Reforms

Deputy Prime Minister meets a US delegation
In Erbil, Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani welcomed a US Department of Defense team led by Dana Stroul, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense (DASD) for the Middle East. The meeting addressed the Ministry of Peshmerga reform problems and how to maintain coordination in the battle against terrorism.
At the June 21, 2023, meeting in Erbil, Stroul stressed her country's commitment to continuing its alliance with the United States and working with it in the fight against terrorism. She also praised the Peshmerga forces for their work against ISIS.
In this light, the Deputy Prime Minister expressed his optimism that the alliance and cooperation between the Peshmerga forces and US forces will continue to produce significant results in the future. Both parties agreed that greater coordination is required to combat the threat of terrorism in the region.
The meeting also covered the reform process in the PeshmergaMinistry. The US delegation requested that the reform process in the Peshmerga Ministry be accelerated because the US wishes to continue supporting the Peshmerga forces.
Qubad Talabani stated, "We are prepared to expedite the procedure." He highlighted that political disputes should not obstruct the progression of reforms.
Also, the agreement reached between the Peshmerga Ministry and the US Department of Defense, he continued, should be put into effect, and a temporary minister should be appointed right away to oversee the reform of the ministry and Peshmergaforces.
