Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Iraq, Cui Wei, discussed the history of relations between the Chinese state and Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, the role of President Mam Jalal in this development, and the relations between the Chinese Communist Party and the parties of Iraq and Kurdistan, particularly the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK).
In an interview with Al-Masra TV, Ambassador Cui Wei stated: "Iraq and China have strong ties; Iraq was the first Arab nation to establish diplomatic relations with China, and Iraq is a key partner in China's Belt and Road Initiative."
Important agreement between Baghdad and Beijing
Cui Wei, the Chinese ambassador, stated that Chinese President Xi Jinping and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al-Sudani met at the end of 2022 and reached a significant agreement on furthering relations and friendly cooperation in all fields.
He added that China is willing to collaborate with Iraq to implement the recommendations of the Arab-China summit and strengthen quality relations to create a more promising future.
Mam Jalal and China, the Communist Party and the PUK
"The PUK is one of the most significant political forces in Iraq," said Ambassador Cui Wei. “President Mam Jalal played a significant role in the development of relations between our two nations, including between the PUK and the Communist Party of China. Former Iraqi President Mam Jalal was a prominent Iraqi politician and the first Iraqi President to visit China three times since the establishment of diplomatic ties between Iraq and China in 1955, 2004, and 2007. He has had a long and warm friendship with the Chinese people."
"The Communist Party of China and the PUK have a deep and traditional friendship, and in recent years there have been significant changes at all levels between the two parties," he continued.
He also stated that in 2021, Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the PUK, congratulated the Communist Party of China on the 100th anniversary of its founding and that in February 2023, a delegation of the Communist Party of China visited Iraq and met with Mr. Bafel Jalal Talabani.
He clarified that his country would like to collaborate with the PUK and other Iraqi parties to continue strengthening partisan connections between the two nations.
