Qubad Talabani, the
Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, met with Ville Varjola, the
European Union Ambassador to Iraq, to discuss environmental issues, reforms to
the Kurdistan Region's institutions, and other topics of common concern.
The Deputy Prime
Minister thanked the international community for its assistance and support
during the meeting in Erbil, particularly the EU, for bringing the parties
closer together to address their internal issues and issues involving the
Kurdistan Region and Baghdad.
Qubad Talabani stated
that the political parties have agreed on how to solve the problems in a way
that serves the Kurdish people.
In addition, the meeting
involved a discussion on the environment and the potentially negative
consequences of environmental changes. The EU Ambassador praised Talabani's
commitment to climate issues and stated that the EU is willing to assist the
Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the federal government in combating
environmental problems.
In this context, various
strategies to collaborate with the KRG and the federal government on a combined
program to address environmental crises have been considered to ensure it is an
issue of priority in Iraqi policy.
The meeting also covered
the KRG's institutional reform process.
The Deputy Prime
Minister praised the EU for sending economists and other professionals to help
the KRG advance the reform process.
Talabani claimed that
the reforms have advanced to an excellent level in recent years and that the
most crucial step being implemented is that every employee now has a unique
personal number. This number is the cornerstone for the evolution of
e-government and serves as the foundation for a sophisticated financial system
in the Kurdistan Region.
