On International Workers' Day, the Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) delivered a message of congratulations to the workers of Kurdistan, Iraq, and around the world.
The PUK Political Bureau said in a message:
On May 1, International Workers' Day, we extend our warmest greetings to the laborers of Kurdistan, Iraq, and worldwide.
Public and private sector laborers have significantly contributed to the development and construction of this country. As an active social class, they have always been at the vanguard of national liberation and freedom struggles. The class and national struggles of the laborers of Kurdistan and Iraq have elevated their political and syndicate consciousness and motivated them to defend their rights and demands. However, their working conditions, safety, and standard of living are still inferior to their efforts for prosperity and the hardships they endured during their political struggle.
The Kurdistan Parliament enacted the Labor Insurance Law in 2012 and the Labor Law in early 2023 due to the efforts of the PUK team in the government and parliament. However, it has yet to be implemented.
As the PUK believes in social and class justice, we insist on the immediate achievement of laborers' rights and the implementation of these two laws, as well as the suspension of the laws of the fallen Ba'ath regime, particularly the law (150), which abolished the right to self-organization and insurance of workers, to improve the workers' standard of living and working environment.
We urge the Laborers Syndicate to be more assertive in pursuing all workers' rights.
On this occasion, we honor the souls of those laborers who lost their lives while working or struggling.
