The Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has released a statement commemorating the tragedy of Anfal.
The Political Bureau's message said:
On the anniversary of the Anfal tragedy, we remember the unjustly executed martyrs because of their Kurdish identity and salute those who endured during those days.
Thirty-five years ago, the fallen Ba'ath regime perpetrated the Anfal tragedy against Kurdistan's Kurdish people and other communities. Since the Kurdish people's uprising, the PUK has made efforts to rebuild the villages and areas that were destroyed and burned, both on its own budget and through the Kurdistan Regional Government and international humanitarian NGOs, to alleviate the suffering and sorrow caused by this tragedy.
Following the fall of the Ba'ath regime and the establishment of the Supreme Criminal Court in Iraq, the PUK made efforts to recognize the Anfal crime as genocide and to ensure compensation for victims of the regime's crimes. It is now time for this atrocity to be recognized as genocide internationally.
This local and international recognition also paves the way for all other deserved compensation, although none will be sufficient to compensate for the suffering.
Anfal is the pain of the homeland and the nation's eternal sorrow.
