On the anniversary of the overthrow of the former Iraqi Ba'ath regime, the Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) released a statement stating that the new Iraq needs cooperation and unity to put an end to dictatorship and self-imposition.
In its message, the PUK Political Bureau stated:
Today, as we mark the 20th anniversary of the dictatorial Ba'ath regime's demise, we remind everyone that it ruled by force for 35 years, killing and torturing the Iraqi people and denying all freedom and democratic rights before collapsing.
After liberation and twenty years later, we need to take more action in the new Iraq to create a federal state that upholds the rights and obligations of its citizens equally and fosters peace and stability throughout the country, protecting each region from outside threats and attacks.
On this occasion, we hope to end the ideology of dictatorship and self-imposition, prioritize the public interests of our people over personal and party interests, and stop guiding outsiders into Iraq and the Kurdistan Region's land and airspace.
