Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani received Italian Ambassador to Iraq Maurizio Greganti and discussed several issues, including relations between Erbil and Baghdad and the upcoming elections of the Kurdistan Parliament.
Qubad Talabani expressed his continued support for the Iraqi cabinet headed by Mohammed Shia Sudani at the meeting held in Erbil. He also hoped that the two governments in Erbil and Baghdad would soon be able to agree on the oil and gas law issue.
He explained that Iraq is an oil-dependent nation and that other concerns would be tough to overcome until Erbil and Baghdad found a solution to the oil and gas issue.
"It is essential to stop wasting time and concentrate on the negotiations on reaching an agreement on the oil and gas law as well as how to manage and sell oil, " he said. "Delaying the agreement is not in the best interests of the Kurdish and Iraqi people."
During the meeting, the upcoming Kurdish parliamentary elections were also addressed. Qubad Talabani stated that they are ready for the elections, and discussions to establish the electoral law have resumed. 'There is a decent understanding, and the last-seats issue must be resolved.’ "Our vision for the final seats is clear, and our goal is to make sure that the quota seats truly represent the minorities in Kurdistan," he added.
