Qubad Talabani, the Deputy Prime Minister, met with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock in Erbil to address internal matters, relations between Erbil and Baghdad, as well as relations between Germany and the Kurdistan Region.
Darbaz Kosrat Rasul, a member of the Executive Board of the Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, and Daban Shadala, Deputy Minister of the Department of Foreign Relations of the Kurdistan Regional Government, were also present at the meeting. The Deputy Prime Minister reaffirmed his support for Mohammed Shia' Sudani's cabinet and expressed the hope that the new Iraqi government could draft the budget bill and the oil and gas bill in a manner that is in the best interests of the entire country of Iraq.
"The oil and gas law agreement between Erbil and Baghdad will enable resolution of more disputes between the two governments, promoting political and security stability, as well economic growth across Iraq," he added.
The political situation in the Kurdistan Region was also a topic of discussion. According to the German Minister, ‘internal problems in the Kurdistan Region should be settled’ because the German government favors a united region.
Regarding the relations between Erbil and Baghdad, Baerbock highlighted that the German government supports the resolution of disputes between Erbil and Baghdad and that a strong relationship based on the Constitution between the two governments is necessary for it to serve as a source of security, political stability, and economic recovery for all of Iraq.
The meeting continued with discussions concerning the relations between Germany and the Kurdistan Region. Qubad Talabani praised Germany for sending specialists and consultants in various disciplines as support for the region in the past and expressed his hope that this assistance would continue. He also asked the German government to support the regional economy and promote job opportunities in Kurdistan's cities and towns so that all areas of Kurdistan develop in a balanced manner and witness economic recovery.
Furthermore, the meeting also addressed the situation in Shingal. The needs of the people of Shingal must come first, according to Qubad Talabani, to restore order and send the refugees back to their country of origin. All plans and initiatives, he stated, should be conducted with the understanding that the situation in Shingal is delicate.
On the occasion of International Women's Day, they talked about the status of women in Kurdistan. The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that the region includes powerful women who want to launch their own enterprises and projects. He called on the German government and nonprofit organizations to do more to support Kurdish women to strengthen their standing in the job market in Kurdistan.
