The meeting on water issue in Iraq
Iraqi President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid says that the
country must take responsibility for the damage caused by climate change
together with neighboring countries.
On Sunday, February 26, 2023, the Iraqi President chaired a
meeting in Baghdad to discuss the water issue and stressed the significance of
the water conference that will be held in New York and stated that serious and
practical steps should be taken to come to an agreement with the neighboring
nations to share the costs associated with climate change while also providing
Iraq with a fair share of water.
Additionally, he emphasized the need for effective action to
be taken to implement the laws required to safeguard Iraq's water and
agricultural security. Since Iraq is one of the nations most adversely affected
by climate change, negotiations with neighboring nations are required to
achieve this goal.
The Iraqi water resources minister said they had reached an
agreement with Iran's energy minister on exchange of information and
installation of measuring stations on border rivers.
The significance of the president's attendance at the UN
2023 Water Conference, which will take place in New York City the following
month, was also emphasized by the participants.
