Iraq Iraqi Constitution PUK Kurdistan Region

The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has consistently strived to uphold the rights of and promote the prosperity of the Kurdistan Region's residents. In this regard, Qubad Talabani, the PUK's Deputy Prime Minister, has intensified his efforts to end the disagreements between Erbil and Baghdad.

Qubad Talabani recently met with the Iraqi Prime Minister, ambassadors, and party leaders in an effort to find a solution to the issues between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad. "The disputes between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad must be resolved radically," he said, "in order to provide more services and peace for citizens."

Strong relationships promote more peace

Gaylan Qadir, a PUK bloc member in the Iraqi parliament, told PUKMEDIA: "The visits of Qubad Talabani to Baghdad, especially at this time, when the issues between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad are still present and the Federal Court's rulings have made them more complicated, will be a reason to resolve the issues fundamentally."

"The more harmonious Erbil and Baghdad's relations are, the more peace and better services the Iraqi people would experience in general, and in the Kurdistan Region in particular." "The Deputy Prime Minister stressed, as a result, that the two governments should settle their differences in accordance with the Constitution," said Qadir.

Resolving Baghdad's issues will stabilize Kurdistan's finances and politics

Qubad Talabani returned to Baghdad because of his firm views on how to resolve the conflicts between Erbil and Baghdad, and he now advocates for a radical resolution to those conflicts.

Luqman Wardi, Deputy Chairman of the PUK faction in the Kurdistan Parliament, told PUKMEDIA: As in the previous two years, when the Kurdistan Region was experiencing financial difficulties, Qubad Talabani led the delegation of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and was able to reach an agreement with Baghdad, and the recent visits have been for this purpose, he has used his political efforts and relations to find a solution between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad."

"Qubad Talabani has made great efforts to resolve the disputes between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad," he continued. "He has always believed that Baghdad is the strategic depth of the Kurdistan Region and that the best way to guarantee peace and financial and political stability in the Kurdistan Region is to resolve the disputes with Baghdad."

Qubad Talabani, according to Wardi, believes the oil issue and the disputed areas, which have long been a point of dispute between the two governments, should be resolved from Baghdad.

It is time to address the issues

The constitution should be the foundation to settle the disputes between Erbil and Baghdad.

"It is time to end the disputes between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad, which has continued for a long time and has disappointed people," said Hussain Mardan, a member of the Iraqi parliament, to PUKMEDIA.

"Mutual interests and goals are shared by the KRG and the Iraqi government. The sooner the problems are solved, the better because they must be solved eventually, and Qubad Talabani's efforts are characterized by his passion," said Mardan.

The KRG delegation has been led by Qubad Talabani for the past two years, and he has made more than 20 trips to Baghdad. He was able to incorporate the Kurdish portion of the 2021 budget bill during this time, which allowed the Iraqi government to continue sending money to the Kurdistan Region on a monthly basis. The Deputy Prime Minister believes that the conflict between Erbil and Baghdad must be resolved and is now seeking a resolution to the issues that have divided the two governments.
