Dr. Rahel Faraidoon: Health situation under control in Slemani

The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Rahel Faraidoon, announced that the health situation in Slemani Governorate under control after several cases of cholera were recorded in the city's hospitals.

"Although cholera, diarrhea, and vomiting cases have continued to be recorded, the situation is not frightening and the health situation in Slemani under control," Faraidoon said during a press conference today.

He added, "After announcing several cases of infection, the Ministry of Health began to form a committee headed by the Minister of Health and general managers in the ministry, and supreme committees were formed in the provinces under the supervision of the governors and the members of health departments." 

He pointed out that "the Minister of Health directly supervises the health situation in Slemani, and has also visited the city and instructed all health departments to do their utmost to confront the disease."

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) decided to allocate 800 million dinars as an emergency budget to face cholera in Slemani.

The administration of Slemani formed a supreme committee to confront cholera after the province's health declared a "state of emergency" following the registration of deaths due to the epidemic.

On Monday, the Ministry of Health in the Kurdistan Region announced the dedication of 4 hospitals to receive diarrhea and vomiting cases in Slemani Governorate.

Cholera is an acute diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine with Vibrio cholerae bacteria. People can get sick when they swallow food or water contaminated with cholera bacteria. The infection is often mild or without symptoms, but can sometimes be severe and life-threatening.
