Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region and a member of the Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), met with Türkiye’s Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, during a visit to Ankara. Darbaz Kosrat Rasul, a member of the PUK Political Bureau, also attended the meeting.

Held on Friday, 3 July 2026, the talks focused on the latest developments in Türkiye’s peace process. Qubad Talabani reaffirmed the Kurdistan Region and the PUK’s support for the success of the initiative, welcoming the determination shown by the Turkish government and all relevant domestic parties to move the process forward.

Describing the peace process as a historic and significant turning point for Türkiye and the wider region, Talabani said the Kurdistan Region views the progress with confidence and optimism. He added that both the Kurdistan Region and the PUK stand ready to offer any assistance needed to help ensure its success.

He also expressed hope that the new phase would further strengthen ties between Türkiye and the Kurdistan Region, particularly with Sulaymaniyah Governorate, especially in the fields of trade and higher education.

The meeting also covered the latest regional developments, including the continuing tensions between the United States and Iran. Talabani reiterated the Kurdistan Region’s firm position that it will not become involved in regional conflicts, stressing that it will continue working with its partners to promote peace and stability.

Discussions also addressed the political situation in the Kurdistan Region and efforts to form the next cabinet. Talabani said a new political reality has emerged across the region, Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, urging all political parties to take these changes into account and work towards forming a new government without further delay. He warned that continued deadlock would seriously harm the Kurdistan Region’s position.

He concluded by reaffirming that the PUK remains fully committed to forming a government based on genuine partnership that serves all citizens of the Kurdistan Region fairly and without discrimination.
