NATO has restructured its air defence deployment in the province of Malatya in North Kurdistan, reinforcing the alliance's regional security posture.

Turkish Ministry of Defence spokesperson Zeki Aktürk announced that a German Patriot air defence unit has been deployed to the Kürecik military base in Malatya. The system officially assumed responsibility for the base's air defence on 24 June, replacing the US Patriot battery previously stationed there.

The move follows the deployment of an advanced Italian air defence system to the Third Main Jet Base Command in Konya on 18 June as part of NATO's Permanent Defence Plan, aimed at strengthening the region's integrated air defence network.

NATO has been enhancing its capability to counter air and missile threats and safeguard the airspace of member states amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the region, including the recent conflict between Iran and the United States.

Since 2012, the Kürecik military base in Malatya, North Kurdistan, has served as a key NATO early-warning radar site. Its primary mission is to detect and monitor ballistic missile threats originating beyond NATO's borders.
