President Nizar Amedi has stressed the importance of drawing inspiration from the enduring lessons of Imam Hussein’s (peace be upon him) uprising in efforts to build the nation, strengthen security and stability, and uphold the rule of law.

In a speech addressed to the Iraqi people on the occasion of Ashura, the President said the values embodied by Imam Hussein’s stand in Karbala remain highly relevant today, particularly the principles of reform, justice, respect for human dignity, prioritising the public interest, and reinforcing citizenship, coexistence, and national unity.

Amedi stated that the commemoration of Ashura should serve not only as a remembrance of a defining moment in Islamic history but also as a source of guidance in addressing contemporary challenges and shaping a better future.

“The commemoration of Ashura not only calls upon us to reflect on the past, but also motivates us to draw upon its noble values in confronting the challenges of the present and building the future,” he said.

The President noted that Muslims of all schools of thought and sects share a deep love and reverence for the family of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), describing Imam Hussein as a symbol of faith, courage, loyalty, and steadfast adherence to principle.

He said Imam Hussein’s uprising was not driven by a pursuit of power or personal gain, but by a commitment to preserving the values of truth, justice, and reform, as well as protecting the essence of the Islamic message.

Reflecting on the significance of Karbala, Amedi described the city as a spiritual and humanitarian beacon that attracts millions of visitors from around the world each year. He added that Iraqis from all religious, sectarian, and ethnic backgrounds continue to commemorate Ashura in a spirit of solidarity and mutual respect.

The President emphasised that Iraq, as it continues its efforts to consolidate security, stability, and state institutions, is in need of the lessons offered by Imam Hussein’s legacy, particularly those related to justice, responsibility, and service to the common good.

He also called for strengthening social cohesion, preserving national unity, and promoting a culture of dialogue, tolerance, and cooperation among all citizens.

Concluding his address, Amedi prayed for Iraq’s continued security and stability, urging all Iraqis to work together towards building a prosperous, safe, and just homeland worthy of the country’s history and civilisation.
