The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs has welcomed the memorandum of understanding reached between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States, reaffirming Iraq’s continued role as a traditional bridge between countries in the region.
In a statement, the ministry expressed its “welcome for the memorandum of understanding reached between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States of America,” stressing its full support for all initiatives aimed at strengthening dialogue and prioritising diplomatic solutions to crises and conflicts.
It added that, on behalf of the government and people of Iraq, it extends congratulations to both countries, expressing hope that the agreement will help reinforce regional security and stability and open new avenues for understanding and cooperation in the interests of regional populations.
The ministry reiterated Iraq’s longstanding position of rejecting war and supporting dialogue and peaceful means as the only viable path to resolving disputes. It noted that it had closely followed the negotiation process and welcomed the mediation efforts that led to the agreement, particularly those of Pakistan and Qatar, which contributed to the cessation of hostilities.
It further emphasised that Iraq has suffered significantly from the consequences of regional conflicts, reinforcing its belief in the need for greater international and regional efforts to prevent escalation and avoid renewed confrontation.
The ministry expressed hope that this development will bring a definitive end to the state of war and support Iraq’s ongoing efforts to strengthen relations with both friendly and neighbouring states affected by the recent crisis. It underlined that the region requires collective action based on shared security and cooperation to achieve lasting stability, development, and prosperity.
It also confirmed that Iraq will continue its established role in bridging differences between regional states, in line with its balanced foreign policy and commitment to dialogue and mutual understanding.
Finally, the ministry welcomed the anticipated reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to normal navigation, highlighting its importance for the smooth flow of oil and gas to global markets and for supporting stability in international energy supplies.
