Today, 5 June, marks World Environment Day, the United Nations’ largest global platform for environmental awareness. It has been observed by millions of people around the world for decades.

World Environment Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 during the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. Its aim was to generate political and public momentum, encouraging governments and individuals to take greater responsibility for protecting the planet. The first official celebration took place in 1974 under the slogan “Only One Earth”.

The purpose of World Environment Day goes beyond raising awareness; it is intended to inspire meaningful action. It highlights urgent global challenges such as climate change and global warming, plastic pollution and its devastating impact on oceans and wildlife, and land restoration, including efforts to combat desertification and drought, which remains a key global priority.

Each year, a different country hosts the official celebrations in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The event draws attention to a major environmental issue and promotes practical solutions to address it.

World Environment Day 2026 focuses on accelerating ecosystem restoration and strengthening global efforts to protect and revive natural environments.

World Environment Day serves as a powerful reminder that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility that requires action from governments, communities, and individuals alike.
