The Ministry of Agriculture announced on Saturday a ban on the import of 11 crops, while also detailing the area planned for cultivation during the winter season.

Mahdi Dhamad al-Qaisi, an advisor to the Ministry, told Iraqi News Agency that the country’s import policy is guided by the agricultural calendar, which is regularly updated based on local produce availability. The aim is to ensure sufficient crop supply and prevent price increases. He explained that the latest update includes a ban on importing sugar beets, turnips, lettuce, cauliflower, cabbage, eggplant, potatoes, as well as table eggs, chicken, honey, and dates.

Al-Qaisi added that tomato imports are currently permitted but could be restricted in the future depending on local production levels, which can vary between seven and eleven crops.

Regarding the winter cultivation plan, he stated that a total of 4.5 million dunams have been designated for planting. Of this, 3.5 million dunams rely on groundwater through modern irrigation systems, while one million dunams are dependent on surface water. He noted that current irrigation coverage is insufficient to meet all needs, necessitating the continued use of conventional irrigation methods.

On afforestation projects, Al-Qaisi confirmed that the Baghdad belt falls under the responsibility of the Baghdad Municipality, whereas city belts in the provinces are overseen by local governments. The Ministry of Agriculture’s role is restricted to technical supervision, with decision-making and implementation resting with the provincial authorities.
