The Iraqi Ministry of Interior has announced the seizure of approximately 40 kilograms of narcotics during an operation targeting a major international drug trafficker in southern Iraq.

In a statement released today, Friday 4 July 2025, and received by PUKMEDIA, the Ministry said: “As part of the ongoing decisive security efforts led by the Ministry’s units, the General Directorate for Combating Narcotics launched a rapid and precise operation earlier today in a region in southern Iraq.”

The statement continued: “The operation targeted a prominent international drug trafficker and led to the seizure of around 40 kilograms of dangerous substances, including heroin and crystal meth, along with a quantity of Captagon pills.” It was further explained that “this mission marks one of the most significant pre-emptive strikes against smuggling and trafficking networks.”

The ministry declared that the operation remains ongoing, with security forces currently surrounding several other suspects within the same network, in preparation for their arrest and prosecution.
