President Bafel MERI Forum

The President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), Bafel Jalal Talabani, is set to take part in the MERI Forum organised by the Middle East Research Institute (MERI) Foundation, which commenced its activities in Erbil under the banner "Towards Good Governance and Prosperity."

President Bafel will address the panel, which will be chaired by Dr. Dlawer Ala'Aldeen, the President of the MERI Foundation, covering various topics, including the evolving political dynamics in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and what may be expected over the next four years. He will share his perspectives and insights on the current situation and potential solutions.

The MERI Forum, a flagship annual event of the MERI Foundation, aims to bring together local, national, and international policymakers, academics, opinion leaders, civil society activists, journalists, and diplomats to deliberate on pressing issues affecting the region and to propose solutions for decision-makers.

The primary objective of the Forum is to foster peace, stability, and prosperity in Iraq and the broader Middle East through engagement, dialogue, and collective investment.

Consequently, the Middle East Forum 2024 will primarily focus on Iraq’s current policy priorities, the ever-shifting regional dynamics, and opportunities for international collaboration.

A range of urgent themes has been selected for policy discussion and detailed analysis, including: the changing global and regional power dynamics, U.S. policies in the Middle East, peace initiatives in the Levant, Iraq’s role within the surrounding region, addressing Iraq’s vulnerabilities, learning from international experiences, Iraq’s political economy and financial reforms, institutionalising centre-periphery relations, and promoting ethnic and religious coexistence.
