During an exclusive interview with PUKMEDIA, Aran Ghafoor, the Representative of the President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan for student affairs, said: "During the last 48 hours, the Kurdistan Students Association has received applications from over 5,000 students. Our primary objective is to provide services to students and foster connections between institutions and colleges both locally and globally."
Ghafoor added: "Our objective is to position students as the focal point of our activities, to cultivate leaders. We will provide services to students in both the education and higher education sectors through three distinct membership options."
The following is the full interview:
Q/ What is the updated procedure for joining the Students Association?
Previously, our members were to join the student association through a manual form. However, with the progress of technology and its application, we have now developed an electronic form that allows applicants to conveniently access and fill out the form, therefore becoming members of the Student Association. Indeed, the information provided by the applicant will be transmitted to a secure electronic system, enabling all students in the Kurdistan Region, ranging from Zakho to Khanaqin, to join our association. Afterward, the formal form of the Organising Bureau will be filled out for the members.
Q/ How many different kinds of memberships are available?
Three different membership options are available by joining the Student Association. Some members are students who join just to support the association while the association also provides support to them. Another category of membership consists of students who become active members of our association and they heavily engage in its activities. Graduate-support members are another category of membership that we offer. These members can contribute ideas, criticism, and suggestions to the association, and then we can develop those ideas into projects.
Q/ What qualifications must one meet to become a member of the Students' Association?
Students are not required to be members of any particular party. However, participants must be older than 16. We do not discriminate among our members based on race, nationality, religion, or sect.
What are the objectives and strategic framework of the association?
Our objective is to establish robust collaborative partnerships between local universities and colleges and international universities to facilitate the flow of knowledge. Another of our goals is to cultivate leadership skills among our students. Furthermore, we will assist students in their academic pursuits and endeavours at universities, colleges, and even schools, as we believe that the main focus of the Student Association should be on the student and all efforts made to support the student.
Q/ What system will you use to continue your relationship with universities and colleges?
Following its activation, the Students Association has made the decision to appoint a representative in every college and department. Through this representative, we will provide material and moral support to students, as well as administrative assistance. The aim is to foster greater openness among students towards their scientific, artistic, and sports pursuits, and to facilitate the transformation of their ideas into projects.
Q/ What is the current number of new members of the Students Association?
Within the last 48 hours, following the activation of the electronic form link, over 5,000 students have completed the electronic membership form and submitted membership applications. This indicates that students are enthusiastic about engaging in activities. They have selected the Students Association as their sole source of support, aiming to address the void left by the suspension of the Students Association in recent years.
Q/ What forms of support would the Students Association provide to students pursuing studies in the education sector?
The decision has been made to cater to students in two specific domains: higher education and education. Two supervisors will be designated for higher education and the education sector, respectively, to ensure effective service to students in both domains.
