Bafel Jalal Talabani has been re-elected as the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) president.

On September 27, 2023, Sulaymaniyah hosted the fifth PUK Congress. Following a recess, the Congress reconvened in the afternoon and resumed the necessary legal procedures. Bafel Jalal Talabani was re-elected as the party's president after receiving the majority of votes from Congress members.

Profile of President Bafel Jalal Talabani:

Bafel Jalal Husamuddin Talabani was born in 1973 in Baghdad.

Bafel Jalal Talabani is the eldest child of Jalal Talabani and Hero Ibrahim Ahmed, and he is Qubad Talabani's sibling. His childhood and early adolescence were spent at his grandfather Ibrahim Ahmed's residence in the United Kingdom. During the years when he was growing up, he spent a lot of time reading and playing sports.

He served as the previous director of President Talabani's secretariat. In 1996, he participated in the training programme of the French Corps. In 1998, he underwent military training with the British, and in 2000, he trained with U.S. Special Forces. He pursued an academic examination of political strategy in both the United States and the United Kingdom. 

Afterwards, they established a counter-terrorism agency and assumed oversight of counter-terrorism matters in the Kurdistan Region. Bafel Talabani emerged prominently after the death of President Mam Jalal and devoted his efforts to the reunification of the PUK, while also addressing and reconciling divergent voices within and beyond the party.

He had role in the selection process of the Iraqi President and prior to the PUK's 4th Congress, he did not hold a party position but was involved in the selection process for Iraqi presidents. During the aforementioned congress, he was elected as the co-president of the PUK on February 18, 2020, garnering the support of a majority of the members of the Leadership Council. By a majority vote of the Leadership Council, he assumed the position of exclusive President of the PUK on August 28, 2022.

During his presidency, he played an essential role in uniting the ranks of the PUK, boosting its standing in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and the region. President Bafel, as a prominent figure in the nation, has been actively engaged in numerous political meetings and initiatives throughout the preceding year.

Bafel Jalal Talabani was re-elected as the President of the PUK during the fifth congress of the party.
