Mrs. Hero Ibrahim Ahmed
Mrs. Hero Ibrahim Ahmed, the late president Mam Jalal's wife and a former first lady of Iraq, was honored by the American consulate general in Erbil. They highlighted her as one of the women who has influenced and made a difference in business, politics, and civil society.
The US Consulate issued the following statement, which they shared on their social media: "During these 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, we’re highlighting women who have made a difference in politics, business, civil society, science, and the arts. Hero Ibrahim Ahmed, also popularly known as Hero Khan, is the former First Lady of Iraq, and the first Kurd in that position."
The statement continued, "Hero Khan was born in 1948 and is a native of Sulaymaniyah. She started her political life at a young age, and she fought the previous oppressive regime alongside her late husband the former President of Iraq Jalal Talabani. Hero Khan is also known for her support of cultural and artistic endeavors, including supporting individual artists and authors."
The US Consulate promoted awareness of the need to remove female genital mutilation, end domestic abuse against women, and encourage women's economic empowerment as part of the 16-day Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign which they announced in late November.
