20 women leaders in the Middle East and South Africa discuss domestic violence

Twenty women leaders in the Middle East and South Africa participated in a two-day video conference meeting.

Dr. Basma Muhammad Mustafa, head of the Women's Leadership Academy in Iraq, told PUKmedia, "Women leaders from Iraq, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Libya, Algeria, Tunisia, and Palestine participated in a video conference meeting aiming to strengthen global women's movements through cooperation, learning, exchange of experiences and knowledge, and discussing strategies."

She continued that they discussed the challenges and opportunities available to women's rights and building democracy in the Middle East and North Africa.

Dr. Basma explained that she spoke about domestic violence in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, and the legislation of the domestic violence law in the Kurdistan Region, with women's organizations in Iraq continuing campaigns to advocate for the legislation of the law in Iraq.

She indicated the amendment of the Personal Status Law in the Kurdistan Region, which was not done in Iraq, and the reasons for the increase in cases of violence against women, stressing that they will work to activate the law in the Kurdistan Region and its legislation in Iraq. 

Basma also revealed that they also decided to hold a meeting of organizations soon and establish a network to work on enacting laws and activating them in countries that do not have such laws.
